Malaysia crosses 1.7 million mark with 20,579 new Covid-19 infections today

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 — The number of new Covid-19 cases in the country dipped today to 20,579, roughly 2,000 cases fewer than the 22,597 reported yesterday.

However, today’s numbers have pushed the national case tally past the 1.7 million mark with 1,706,089 cases to date.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah tweeted that Selangor remains the state with the most cases with 4,591 new infections today.

Outside of that, the viral disease is climbing in Borneo Malaysia. Sabah has 2,578 new cases and Sarawak 2,522 new cases, taking second and third spots respectively.

Johor reported 1,852 new cases, with Kedah at 1,755, and Penang at 1,378 new Covid-19 infections, while Kuala Lumpur today reported 680 new infections.

Dr Noor Hisham in his full statement later reported how Covid-19 related fatalities breached the 16,000 mark with 285 more Covid-19 deaths today.

This brings the local death toll to 16,087, or a fatality rate of 0.94 per cent.

Of today’s deaths, 51 of them were brought in dead involving 30 locals and 21 non-Malaysians.

Every state except Labuan and Putrajaya reported Covid-19 deaths today, with the bulk being 110 deaths reported in Selangor, 50 in Johor, 46 in Sabah, 22 in Kuala Lumpur, and 16 in Penang.

Dr Noor Hisham also reported 26 new Covid-19 clusters, 20 of which were detected in workplaces, five from community transmissions, and one in an educational institution.

Meanwhile, 20,845 patients were declared recovered and discharged by the Health Ministry, bringing the recovery rate 83.4 per cent with 1,422,005 recoveries to date.
