KUANTAN: The KD Perdana and its crew have arrived safely back to port after rescuing nine members of a boarding team that went missing on Saturday.
The nine Navy personnel had a tearful reunion with waiting family members as they disembarked at the Tanjung Gelang naval base here at 10am Tuesday.
Navy chief Admiral Tan Sri Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin thanked Malaysians who had prayed for the safety of the men.
“In the course of their duty, our personnel always have to face risks, whether it is the weather conditions, threats at sea or during operations.
Admiral Ahmad Kamarulzaman also thanked the Royal Malaysian Air Force, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, the marine police and the Navy’s counterparts from Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam for their assistance in the search and rescue operation.
The men were involved in an operation to chase off foreign fishing boats when they lost radio communication with KD Perdana off Tanjung Sedili, Johor.
They were spotted by a merchant ship 90 nautical miles off Kuantan on Monday evening.
Admiral Ahmad Kamarulzaman said the Navy’s board of inquiry would investigate the cause of the incident.
