PUTRAJAYA: Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin has asked his PAS counterpart to explain about a “memorandum of agreement” the latter said he drafted for the deputy prime minister’s post.
“Ask him what he meant by an agreement,” he told reporters at a function here, referring to Takiyuddin Hassan.
Hamzah refused to comment further on the matter.
Yesterday, Takiyuddin said he, as the then law minister, had drafted a “memorandum of agreement” between Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Perikatan Nasional (PN) – the coalition led by Bersatu – on the deputy prime minister’s post.
Earlier this month, Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan defended his party’s demand for the post, saying it was part of the agreement in exchange for PN to back Ismail as the prime minister prior to his appointment last August.
On a separate issue, Hamzah also said that the Registrar of Societies (RoS) would independently decide on Umno’s application to amend the party’s constitution.
“It’s true that I’m the minister in charge of overseeing the RoS but it makes its decisions independently,” Bernama reported him as saying.
In May, the Umno special general assembly unanimously approved a motion to amend its constitution to allow party elections to be held no later than six months after a general election.
On July 7, RoS said that the decision on Umno’s application would be known on July 16 at the latest.
